Venice to reinstate daytripper fee for 60 days in 2026
Key Points
  • Venice's daytripper fee returns in 2026 for 60 days on specific dates
  • Fee is €5-€10 with exemptions and enforcement via QR codes and fines
  • Context includes overtourism with 30M annual tourists and previous measures

The fee is €5 if reserved in advance, and €10 if reserved less than four days in advance, applying during peak hours from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Exemptions include residents, Venetian-born visitors, students, workers, tourists with hotel reservations, and those visiting residents. Visitors must obtain a QR code to show at access points, with spot checks at seven locations, and fines for not paying or registering range from €50 to €300.

This move comes amid ongoing challenges with overtourism in Venice, where around 30 million tourists visit annually, with 70% staying only for the day. Last year's figures show day visitor numbers dropped only slightly despite the fee, and peak dates attracted nearly 25,000 tourists, equivalent to half the resident population. Venice was the first city in the world to charge admission for daytrippers when it introduced the fee on April 25, 2024, following other measures such as a 2021 ban on cruise ships docking in the historic centre.

The number of tourist beds officially overtook the number of residents last summer, with residents under 50,000.
