Swedish military seeks expanded missile firing at Villingsberg range
Key Points
  • Swedish military seeks expanded missile firing capabilities at Villingsberg range
  • Expansion driven by NATO readiness needs after Russia's Ukraine attack and Sweden's NATO membership
  • Military wants more practice days including evenings and nights for NATO exercises

The Swedish Armed Forces currently have permission to shoot on 220 days per year at the Villingsberg shooting range between Örebro and Karlskoga, but they also want to be able to fire missiles into the shooting range from locations outside it. According to officials, the reason for seeking expanded permits for several shooting ranges across the country is the increased defense readiness after Russia's attack on Ukraine and Sweden's NATO membership. The military wants to be able to practice more days and also evenings and nights to be able to conduct NATO exercises.

A consultation meeting was held where several residents in the vicinity of the shooting range gathered to get information and ask questions. The Villingsberg shooting range was created in 1942, and when it was established, they shot with cannons with a range of a few kilometers. The Swedish Armed Forces will take the feedback received from residents, the municipality, and the county administrative board and then conduct an environmental inventory, including noise, before proceeding with the application.
