Saco report highlights strong job prospects for many graduates
Key Points
  • University admissions open Monday with Saco reporting strong job prospects for many graduates by 2031.
  • Professions like nurse, engineer, and teacher have high demand, while architect and real estate agent face tough competition.
  • AI development complicates job forecasts, and Sweden had a shortage of 61,000 workers in various professions last year.

University and college admissions open on Monday. On Monday, Saco releases its report on future prospects for academics in 2031. According to Saco, the future is bright for many who choose to further their education.

"An academic education is a very good investment, so those who start in the autumn have very good opportunities to get a job within five years," said Sofia Rydgren Stale, chairperson of Saco, Sweden's Confederation of Professional Associations. According to several organizations and trade unions, there are good opportunities to get jobs in many industries if you have the right education. This applies to both practical high school educations and a large part of college and university educations.

It is important that AI does not take over the jobs.

Among others, officers, civil engineers, and certain teachers will have an easy time getting jobs in five years, according to Saco. Professions with the best future prospects include nurse, assistant nurse, midwife, high school and upper secondary teacher, IT architect, system developer, engineer, carpenter, plumbing installer, electrician, cook, priest, deacon, parish educator, officer, and biomedical analyst. However, in a few professions, the competition for available jobs is assessed to become tough.

Professions with little need include architect, real estate agent, health scientist, communication professions, museum and cultural environment professions, and social scientist. According to Saco, the rapid development of artificial intelligence complicates the assessments, though it is unclear how exactly AI complicates the assessments of future job prospects. According to Statistics Sweden (SCB), 61,000 people were lacking in various professions last year.

The shortage was somewhat lower than in 2024. The shortage was approximately as large in professions requiring high school education as in post-secondary education.
