Ronneby Airport to Lose Summer Flights to Stockholm

Economy & businessEconomy
Key Points
  • SAS suspends Ronneby-Stockholm flights from June 20 to August 11, leaving the airport without summer commercial flights.
  • Region Blekinge failed to secure alternative airline funding due to business disinterest and legal restrictions on public financing.
  • Long-term efforts continue to establish competing air routes, emphasizing the importance of accessibility for Blekinge's future.

SAS has informed that it plans a flight suspension between Ronneby and Stockholm from June 20 to August 11 this year. This means Ronneby Airport will be without commercial summer flights for the first time during that period. Region Blekinge, together with Ronneby Airport and the business community, has worked to find a solution for a flight route between Ronneby and Stockholm this summer.

However, Region Blekinge has not succeeded in finding a solution for summer flights. ' One airline considered taking on the assignment and made an offer, but it is unknown which airline this was. Region Blekinge attempted to get the county's largest companies to finance another airline to operate during the summer.

We have investigated a range of different possibilities, there has been a great willingness, but now we are forced to conclude that we have not succeeded in going all the way so far.

Mona Glans, Regional Development Director in Region Blekinge

The attempts to get companies to finance another airline have not succeeded. ' The business community in Blekinge has not deemed it relevant to finance the initiative at present, though specific reasons for this decision are unclear. Sveriges Kommuner och Regioner (SKR) lawyers investigated and concluded that it is not possible for a region or municipality to help finance such an initiative.

' Despite this setback, there is ongoing long-term work to establish a competing airline to Stockholm and a desired flight route to Europe, though details of this plan are not specified.

I then gave Mona Glans the task of together with the airport manager looking at an alternative solution.
