Problematic Residence Transforms Through New Leadership and Staff Competence
Key Points
  • Past problems included management instability and care deficiencies
  • Specific issues involved medication management, conflicts, and unclear responsibilities
  • Turnaround efforts focused on new leadership and expanded staff competence

The residence has previously been described in the media as a problematic residence, according to an official source. The journey here has involved a lot of hard work, lacking leadership, structure, and routines, the official said. The staff has essentially been replaced and there have been around five managers in recent years.

Specific deficiencies plagued the residence, including problems in medication management, deviation reports left without action, conflicts in the workgroup, staffing issues, and unclearness about responsibilities, the official reported. The missing competence involved understanding residents who no longer have language and can communicate, and understanding how to ensure residents have the opportunity to live an independent life. Turnaround efforts included hiring Rose-Marie Karlsson, Nicole Horvath, and Monica Plåt, who have worked hard to create a better-functioning residence, the official said.

The staff has been expanded and they have received much more competence-enhancing efforts, including ensuring staff get competence in the LSS law's design, the importance of residents' right to independence and choosing how they want to live their lives, and courses in AKK (Alternative and Augmentative Communication). Current improvements show the staff has been divided into two teams and has received clearer work distribution, making it less heavy and giving them more time to spend with residents, according to the official. The staff now has a stable workgroup, helps each other, encourages each other, and there is a lot of laughter at work, the official said.

The residence is large and has ten residents with acquired brain injuries with extensive care needs and widely varying psychiatric diagnoses that require multifaceted competence, the official noted.
