According to major media reports, bottle and machete-wielding thugs attacked a Motherwell man outside his home in broad daylight. 25pm when he was attacked. The victim was initially struck on the head with an Eldorado wine bottle, knocking him to the ground.

Dean Markson, 27, admitted assaulting the victim to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement at Merryton Tower on May 27. Markson ran towards him and struck him on the head with an Eldorado wine bottle, knocking him to the ground. He continued to inflict blows until the bottle slipped out of his hand and smashed.

Another male then struck the victim repeatedly on the head and back with a machete. The pair left the scene in a car. Police officers identified Markson from CCTV images.

Markson's DNA was on the broken bottle. The victim’s partner returned home to find him injured. Worried about the amount of blood he had lost, she called an ambulance.

He had a number of cuts, the most serious of which was a 5cm wound to his back that was closed with stitches. The motive for the attack has not been determined. Sentence on Markson, who was on bail at the time of the assault, was deferred for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment.

He has been in custody since his arrest in May and Sheriff John Hamilton KC remanded him again. Co-accused Connor Reilly, 32, of Dundyvan Road, Coatbridge, failed to attend court and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The specific charges Markson and Reilly are facing have not been disclosed.
