Kulturparken Småland seeks extra funding amid collection backlog
Key Points
  • Kulturparken Småland requests additional funding from owners Växjö Municipality and Region Kronoberg, with responses pending
  • Background on Kulturparken Småland's formation and current activities including museums and collections
  • Challenges with handling collections and financial pressures, with calls for political action

The board of Kulturparken Småland recently requested an additional two million kronor per year from its owners Växjö Municipality and Region Kronoberg. Växjö Municipality stated in a written response that the municipal board's presidium discussed the matter and that the request should be handled in the budget committee and in the active leisure process. Anna-Karin Axelsson, Head of Cultural Operations at Region Kronoberg, wrote that the matter will be raised at the cultural committee's meeting in April but that a final decision will be delayed until October when they decide on the internal budget for 2027.

Kulturparken Småland was formed in 2009 with the goal of coordinating cultural heritage issues in Kronoberg County. Its activities include Smålands Museum, Sweden's Glass Museum, the Emigrants' House, Hjärtenholm Agricultural Museum, Cultural Heritage Center Småland, Kronoberg Archive, and the steamship Thor. 5 million objects are collected.

Some of the objects are already forced to remain in boxes because staff do not have time to handle and register everything. Running museum activities, archives, and collections involves strongly cost-demanding buildings. The drastic measures should be taken by the politicians, not Kulturparken.

They must set the economy in relation to the owner directives. Education is important for our youth, for people who want to improve themselves. Also for families with children and researchers.

Here you can see, take, and feel the cultural heritage.
