Gävle Municipality Launches Restoration and Upgrade Projects
Key Points
  • Restoration of iconic 'Fnasket i plasket' fountain to bring water back after years
  • Major lighting replacement project to upgrade old fixtures with energy-efficient LEDs across municipality
  • Urgent quay renovation needed to prevent collapse of historic structures along Gavleån

The 'Fnasket i plasket' fountain, which has had its obvious place in the center of Gävle since 1956, will soon finally have water again. According to SVT Gävleborg, Malva Molund at Gävle Konstcentrum described the goal as having water in the fountain basin sometime during the summer. The restoration, decided by the Culture and Leisure Committee, is expected to cost Gävle municipality 1.5–2 million kronor, though the exact start date has not been specified.

An extensive replacement of lighting will likely affect every resident's daily life, with old lighting fixtures being replaced with new ones throughout the municipality, especially in Boulognerskogen. According to Gefle Dagblad, Anders Ekman, chairman of the Community Building Committee, described the current lighting fixtures as of a model no longer manufactured and not meeting EU energy requirements, and noted that efforts will be made to ensure Boulognerskogen is better lit. The cost for the lighting replacement is estimated at 31.5 million kronor per year for three years, with the project involving switching to better LED lighting, but funding details beyond the estimated costs remain unclear.

The quay north of Gavleån in central Gävle is old and needs renovation, with today's quays built in the late 1800s. According to Gefle Dagblad, Anders Ekman described the quay renovation as a large project but absolutely necessary, warning that if not done, the old quays will eventually collapse. The municipality will continue with measures to prevent landslides and collapses along Gavleån, though the specific timeline and detailed measures for the project have not been announced.

Budget constraints and project timelines pose challenges, as the largest expense in the Community Building Committee's investment plan will not be completed during 2026, according to major media reports. Environmental or community impacts from these projects are yet to be detailed.

It is a large project, but it is absolutely necessary. If we do not do this, the old quays will eventually collapse.

The current ones are lighting fixtures of a model that is no longer manufactured and they are also lamps that do not meet the EU energy requirements. In connection with that, we will also ensure that Boulognerskogen becomes better lit.

We will also carry out an extensive replacement of old streetlights that are of an old model. We will then take the opportunity to switch to LED lighting that is better.
