According to sources, Ward 1 previously had only two single rooms, with the rest being two- and four-bed rooms featuring shared toilets and partition walls for privacy. The situation was also tough for relatives and staff. A renovation had been on the agenda for a long time; in the fall of 2022, the idea was that it would have started, but it was postponed due to roof and ventilation work.
In the fall of 2023, concerning proposals emerged that the ward would instead be closed when Region Västmanland was dealing with deficits. The exact reasons for the three-year delay in the renovation project have not been disclosed. In February 2024, the regional council decided that the renovation would go ahead and that the ward would thus remain.
In January 2025, the construction chaos that is now over began. In addition to converting the old two- and four-bed rooms into single rooms, a larger staff room, a new patient dining room, and a preparation kitchen have been built. ' How the renovation has impacted patient care quality or staff satisfaction metrics is not yet known.
The renovation of the ward has cost 20 million kronor, and at the same time, maintenance work for 19 million kronor has been carried out.
