EHV-1 Outbreak in Halland Prompts Horse Competition Cancellations
Key Points
  • A horse in Halland tested positive for EHV-1 after competing in Laholm and Kungsbacka in early March.
  • The Swedish Equestrian Federation issued alerts, leading to multiple competition cancellations to prevent spread.
  • Authorities recommend a 21-day isolation for all exposed horses to contain the outbreak effectively.

A horse that participated in a competition in Laholm on March 8 and in Kungsbacka on March 6-8 was later found to be carrying EHV-1, according to major media reports. In response, the Swedish Equestrian Federation issued information, and several organizers canceled competitions. The virus is also called abortion virus because it can cause, among other things, miscarriage in horses that become sick, as noted by Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt (SVA).

Horses that participated in any of the competitions should be kept under observation for three weeks, SVA stated. " It remains unknown how many horses were exposed to the infected horse at the competitions or what specific competitions were canceled. The current status of the infected horse has not been disclosed.

If all horses that were at the competitions are kept isolated for 21 days, the spread of infection can be stopped.

All horses in the stable that have been in contact with the horse that was at the competition should also be kept under observation during the observation period.
