Women report four Life Guards officers for sex crimes

Crime & justiceCrime
Key Points
  • Ten women reported four officers for over 20 sexual offenses at the Swedish Life Guards.
  • Two officers resigned and are under police investigation; one received a warning, another was cleared of rape.
  • Victims feared reprisals; commander calls situation 'extremely serious'.

The military police received the information via an auditor, a legal advisor within the Swedish Armed Forces, according to Expressen. The officers allegedly selected and mapped the women in chats, though the timeline of the alleged abuses remains unclear. Dufberg learned of the reports in autumn and on November 3 initiated an investigation, which he later handed over to the personnel responsibility board (personalansvarsnämnden), according to Dagens Nyheter.

As a result of the investigation, two of the officers voluntarily left their positions at Livgardet, and the board dropped the cases against them. Both have been reported to the police, but the prosecutor has not yet decided on charges, Expressen reported. The other two officers still work at Livgardet: one received a warning from the board, while the other was investigated for two rapes but the prosecutor dropped the preliminary investigation.

The women stated in the investigation that they did not dare report earlier due to fear of reprisals and their dependency on the officers, according to Expressen. Dufberg described the situation as 'extremely serious' and, according to Dagens Nyheter, said that no employee should fear reprisals for reporting. He also noted that the investigation should be handled under secrecy to protect victims, accused, and witnesses, and that it is unacceptable to investigate who said what or attack the person who reported. The women have received support from the defense health service and managers, and none still work alongside the two officers in service.

Broader context reveals systemic issues: in a review in summer 2025, SVT reported that half of all reported violations, sexual offenses, or violent incidents within the defense are resolved through salary deductions. Dufberg said it is difficult for him to evaluate the harshness of penalties due to lack of insight into all cases, according to Sveriges Radio Nyheter.
