According to multiple reports, Jane Green, a former secretary from Carshalton, Surrey, was washing her recycling bin when the wheels slid out from underneath her. As she reached down into the green bin, she pushed it over and fell deeper inside while trying to haul herself up. CCTV footage showed her pulling herself out of the toppled bin, cradling her shoulder and rocking back and forth in pain.
A passerby heard her shouting for her husband and called an ambulance. X-rays confirmed she had fractured her shoulder, and she was sent home in a sling. In the days following the accident, she struggled to move.
People who suffer shoulder fractures, also called humeral fractures, typically wear slings for several weeks, and such injuries can cause soreness, limited mobility, muscle loss, and a sore neck as other body parts compensate. The specific medical treatment she received at A&E beyond the X-ray has not been disclosed, and the identity of the passerby who called the ambulance remains unknown. It is also unclear what the current status of her recovery is or if there has been any official response from local authorities regarding safety advice for wheelie bin incidents.
