Key Points
  • Police conducted a welfare check after a 91-year-old woman missed Are You Okay? program calls and her daughter's contacts
  • Officers found the woman safe in her bedroom playing video games
  • Police reminded residents about the availability of the Are You Okay? program

The woman was enrolled in the Are You Okay? program, which provides daily phone calls to check on residents' safety and health. Officers became concerned when calls to the woman went unanswered last Thursday, and her daughter also failed to reach her.

Dispatched to her home, officers found no answer at the front door, gained entry using a garage code, and saw her car parked inside. Body camera footage captured officers calling out 'Westlake Police' as they searched the house. They located the woman in her bedroom, where she was safe and playing video games.

Police confirmed she did not respond to calls because she was busy trying to beat her top score in a game, though the specific game she was playing has not been disclosed. It is also unclear how long she had been unresponsive before the check or if any health conditions prompted her enrollment in the program. Westlake Police Captain Jerry Vogel said everyone was a little alarmed that the woman was missing contacts.

He also said the incident is a great reminder that Westlake residents have the Are You Okay? service available and can sign up anytime. Whether the woman plans to continue participating in the program after this incident remains unknown.
