Wizard-themed firm rescued in pre-pack administration deal

Economy & businessEconomy
Key Points
  • The Potions Cauldron Ltd entered administration on April 10, 2026, but was immediately rescued in a pre-pack deal
  • The company operates wizard-themed attractions including The Hole In Wand crazy golf chain
  • The rescue saved 72-80 jobs and most operations continue normally, with only one Edinburgh site closing

The Potions Cauldron Ltd was described as being in a distressed position. The York-based company, founded in 2018 by Phil Pinder and Ben Fry, operates as a magical drinks emporium and entertainment company specializing in wizard-themed retail and immersive experiences. Its brands include The Potions Cauldron apothecary shops, The Potions Academy potion-making classes, The Potions Express retail kiosk at York Station, and The Hole In Wand crazy golf chain, which runs nine-hole wizard-themed mini-golf courses where players receive a complimentary magical potion drink at the end of their round in locations such as York, Blackpool, Chester, Leeds, and Seaham.

All the brands were immediately rescued in a pre-pack deal on the same day as the administration, with a newly formed company, The Potions Group Ltd, buying the business. The acquisition saved between 72 and 80 jobs across the group, and all of the English Hole In Wand golf courses and retail sites continue to trade as normal. The only closure was The Potions Cauldron Edinburgh on Rose Street, which opened in May 2023 and resulted in four redundancies.

The brand names will continue under the new structure, including The Potions Academy and The Hole In Wand, with Phil Pinder, Ben Fry, and Stuart Jarman remaining involved in the new company and Jarman continuing as managing director. Joint administrators from the London financial group BTG were appointed. The company behind The Hole In Wand has been rescued after briefly falling into administration earlier this month.

The specific factors that led to the company's distressed position and administration remain unclear, as do the financial structure or terms of the pre-pack deal with The Potions Group Ltd and why The Potions Cauldron Edinburgh was specifically closed while other sites remained open.
