Hunting for wild boar has increased sharply in Skåne, with around 35,000 wild boar shot in the region last year, according to major media reports. The cause of this sharp increase remains unclear, and it is not known what specific measures are being taken to address the related rise in dog injuries. More dogs are being injured in connection with wild boar hunting, though the exact number of such incidents has not been confirmed.
According to Lars Persson, choosing the right type of dog is crucial to reduce the risk of injury to dogs during hunting. Hunters in Skåne are more accustomed to wild boar than colleagues further north, where the species is relatively new, Persson noted. Traces of wild boar are visible everywhere in the popular outdoor area Rya åsar, and large areas around Ramshulan have been dug up, indicating a significant environmental impact.
The full ecological consequences of this increased hunting and boar activity are not yet fully understood, and it is unknown whether regulatory changes or hunting policies are being considered in response.
