Visby Hospital Launches Art Channel on TV Screens to Aid Recovery
Key Points
  • Visby Hospital launched an Art Channel on March 19, 2026, showing public art on TV screens to aid recovery.
  • The initiative aims to promote healing, reduce stress, and increase cultural accessibility in healthcare settings.
  • Films will alternate on the channel, produced through collaboration between Region Gotland and Gotlands Museum.

The Art Channel was inaugurated today at Visby Hospital, where visitors can watch public art on the hospital's TV screens. The idea originated from the hospital's property manager and property service. Patrik Gahm, property manager for Region Gotland, stated, 'Historically, art and fine views are important for recovery.

We realized that there was an opportunity to use the hospital's approximately 200 monitors in waiting rooms and patient rooms to display art from the hospital. ' Berit Ångman Svedjemo, curator for public art at Gotlands Museum, said, 'With the help of art, we hope to provide exciting, fine, and rewarding impressions for all who visit and stay in healthcare. We chose to make films with public art from both Visby Hospital and Visborg Town Hall.

Historically, art and fine views are important for recovery. We realized that there was an opportunity to use the hospital's approximately 200 monitors in waiting rooms and patient rooms to display art from the hospital. We bounced the idea with the art curator and it grew to become the Art Channel, a type of 'slow TV' for art.

' The Art Channel is a result of an innovative collaboration between several administrations within Region Gotland and Gotlands Museum, which has a mandate to manage the region's art collection. The films are produced by Region Gotland in collaboration with Gotlands Museum, with funding from Konst och Form Gotland and Kultur och Hälsa, and the production was carried out by photographers Joel Nilsson and Martin Ridne. The channel is expected to contribute to the region's investment in culture and health, as art in healthcare promotes health, reduces stress, and creates a more personal and healing environment for patients and staff.

It also supports the goal to increase cultural experiences for children and young people. Through technology, art reaches more people and more rooms via the hospital's many TV screens, enabling taking time, pausing, and discovering the artworks, with hopes to arouse curiosity and be experienced in the moment.

With the help of art, we hope to provide exciting, fine, and rewarding impressions for all who visit and stay in healthcare. We chose to make films with public art from both Visby Hospital and Visborg Town Hall. At a calm pace, they show artworks, both in close-ups and in their entirety.
