Key Points
  • A viral coffee tin from Zoégas and Rörstrand is offered free with coffee purchases
  • Limited availability has led to high demand, queues, and fights in stores
  • Stores are using raffles to manage demand, with some unauthorized activities

The viral coffee tin is a storage container made of tin, designed by Swedish porcelain firm Rörstrand for coffee company Zoégas, according to official sources. This trend stems from an advertising campaign between the two companies, with the blue-flowered tin given out free with the purchase of coffee in several stores around the country. Stores have had an offer where customers can buy two coffee packages and get one of these tins, but they have only received a very limited number of the tins.

Only the larger grocery stores received the viral coffee tins, and in some trends, smaller stores do not have the opportunity to order the products, official sources said. The tin has been hyped on social media, creating a rush to get one. This has resulted in long queues and fights at stores, according to official sources.

In response to the chaos, several stores in Värmland have chosen to raffle off the tins instead to avoid a rush and make it fair, official sources said. However, one raffle, which benefited Stadsmissionen, turned out to be unauthorized. On secondary markets, the tins are resold for several thousand kronor.

The coffee tin trend has caused significant disruption in Swedish retail.
