The smell from the wastewater treatment plant has been a subject of discussion for decades in Vimmerby, according to officials. The debate recently reignited in local media after residents experienced days of 'egg fart' and 'poop fog' smells. The reason the smell is being discussed again is somewhat unclear, according to Vimmerby Miljö och Energi CEO Olle Fogelin.
A possible temporary cause is that part of the ventilation system is being rebuilt, and shutting off ventilation sections may have increased the smell for a short period, Fogelin said. He acknowledges there are challenges to continue working on regarding the smell. Fogelin disagrees that it smells more in Vimmerby than in other municipalities.
The wastewater treatment plant is located relatively centrally in the municipality, and the optimal solution would have been to place it elsewhere, he noted. How many residents have complained recently and the exact timeline for the ventilation rebuild with its expected impact have not been confirmed.
