Vikenpassagen opens as Karlstad train hub completed
Key Points
  • Vikenpassagen inaugurated May 5, completing train-related works at Karlstads resecentrum.
  • Project collaboration aims to increase capacity and punctuality, with planning dating back to 2010.
  • The passage is 10m wide; construction took 3 years and 3 months; new tracks are in place.

According to officials, the work on Karlstads resecentrum is a collaboration between Karlstads kommun, Region Värmland, Trafikverket, and Jernhusen within the Tåg i tid project, with the goal of increasing capacity on the Värmland line and creating better conditions for more punctual and reliable train traffic throughout the region. They added that planning for the project began in 2010, and that upgrading infrastructure aims to reduce bottlenecks and enable more frequent and dependable rail services.

The centerpiece of the completed works is the Vikenpassagen, a pedestrian and cyclist passage that is ten meters wide, according to officials, providing a safe and spacious link between neighborhoods previously divided by the railway. The new tracks at the central station are now in place, officials confirmed, a critical component that enhances the station's capacity. The construction work took just over three years, approximately three years and three months, and involved careful coordination among the stakeholders to minimize disruptions.

This is an important and long-awaited milestone. When we strengthen the capacity and accessibility of the railway system, we create better opportunities for people to commute, study, work, and run businesses. Good communications are crucial for the whole of Värmland to be able to grow and develop.

Erik Evestam, Chair of the Regional Development Committee in Region Värmland

Officials said bus traffic is planned to move into the area at the turn of the year 2028/2029, a phased integration that will eventually bring regional and city buses together with rail services at the travel center. However, they acknowledged that several details remain unclear, including the total cost of the project, the specific improvements in punctuality that are expected, and how the old station building will be incorporated into the new complex. Elisabeth Björk, Chair of the Public Transport Committee in Region Värmland, stated that gathering trains, regional buses, and city buses in one place will make it easier to travel sustainably and smooth daily commutes for residents and visitors, while contributing to the development of public transport throughout the county. Erik Evestam, Chair of the Regional Development Committee, called the opening a long-awaited milestone, adding that strengthened rail capacity and accessibility create better conditions for work, study, and business, which is vital for Värmland's growth.
