The streaming service's decision leaves uncertainty over who will acquire the Swedish broadcasting rights from 2027. According to Sportbladet, Jonas Karlén, Viaplay's CEO, confirmed that the Champions League will be broadcast until the end of the 2026-2027 season. "For each local market we make strategic priorities to ensure a strong offering and a sustainable business over time," Karlén said in an official statement.
"We have extended the rights we wanted to extend based on our strategic and business assessments," he added. It remains unclear why Viaplay chose not to extend the Swedish rights, and whether it will continue broadcasting other UEFA competitions in Sweden.
