Veterinary nurse warns against communal dog water bowls
Key Points
  • Communal water bowls pose disease risks for dogs
  • Lungworm, salmonella, E. coli are potential threats
  • Unknown cleanliness and wildlife exposure add risk

Jade, a registered veterinary nurse, urged owners to avoid communal water bowls left outside houses, shops, or in dog parks. She said these bowls can transmit diseases such as lungworm via slugs that crawl around the edges. The bowls are also ideal for bacteria like salmonella and E.

coli, Jade added. She noted that owners cannot know if the bowl is clean, how long the water has been sitting, or what other animals, including wildlife, have drunk from it. Jade recommends bringing a travel bowl and a bottle of water to give dogs a drink during walks.
