VE Day awareness low among UK adults, survey finds
Key Points
  • Only 63% of UK adults recognise VE Day as marking the end of WWII in Europe, per RBVE survey.
  • 80% say VE Day is important to British identity, but only 23% think younger generations understand veterans' experiences.
  • Awareness of the 'Tommy' figure is 40% overall, dropping to 16% among Gen Z.

The Opinium poll for the RBVE revealed a generational gap in understanding of military service. While 80% of UK adults consider VE Day an important part of British identity, less than a quarter (23%) believe younger generations understand the experiences of veterans. Awareness of the 'Tommy' figure falls to 16% among Gen Z, compared to 70% of baby boomers.

The survey of 2,052 adults highlighted stark differences in how age groups perceive the iconic silhouette, which has symbolised British soldiers since the First World War. The RBVE launched its 'Still Serving' campaign to mark the 81st anniversary of VE Day. The campaign includes a portrait series of nine veterans photographed by Rankin.

The survey was conducted by Opinium on 2,052 adults.
