Västra Götaland develops new healthcare strategy for 2040
Key Points
  • A new health and healthcare strategy is being developed for Västra Götaland to guide development until 2040, with primary care as the central hub.
  • The region reported a positive financial result for 2025, but hospitals face economic challenges, and the 2026 budget focuses on preparedness.
  • Organizational changes include reducing patient committees from five to two, effective from 2027.

According to major media reports, the strategy will describe the direction for how healthcare should develop to meet residents' needs. The health and healthcare strategy is VGR's overarching governing document for all healthcare funded by the region, covering both health and medical care and dental care. The proposal specifies four long-term strategic areas: person-centered care with focus on proximity, collaboration, and continuity; a health and healthcare system where we take responsibility for our shared resources; future health and healthcare through research, education, development, and innovation; and health and healthcare as part of a sustainable and robust society. The three focus areas are continuity between care and patient, equipping healthcare for an uncertain future, and safe and accessible healthcare information.

Financially, the region reported a positive result of 510 million kronor for 2025, which is 86 million kronor better than budget, according to major media sources. The result is mainly explained by value increases in financial investments and lower pension costs. The detailed budget for 2026 has a focus on strengthening the region's preparedness and resilience in a changed security situation, with a budgeted result of 360 million kronor. However, the hospitals collectively face economic challenges of 665 million kronor.

Organizational changes include a reduction in patient committees from five to two, effective from January 1, 2027, as part of a new political organization for the 2027-2030 term, according to major media reports.

In cultural funding, the Culture Committee in Västra Götalandsregionen annually allocates 18.8 million kronor to development projects within the cultural area, major media sources indicate. The support can be applied for by organizations and municipalities and aims to strengthen the implementation of Västra Götaland's culture strategy. The 38 projects now reported to the Culture Committee in January 2026 were carried out between 2022 and 2025.
