According to sources, there have been plans to demolish Valhallabadet to make room for a new multi-arena. In 2022, a political majority decided that Valhallabadet should be demolished. The Left Party is one of the parties that wants to demolish the bathhouse and opposes plans to preserve it.

" The specific reasons for the 2022 decision have not been disclosed. Several attempts have been made to preserve the 70-year-old bathhouse. The architecture association Fasad is escalating the fight to preserve Valhallabadet and is receiving support from international architects.

You don't go into a museum and say 'that painting is unnecessary, we'll burn it'.

Laurie Neale, Dutch architect

Since 2022, the architecture association Fasad has tried to get politicians to change their minds. Fasad applied to have Valhallabadet declared a listed building by the County Administrative Board but was rejected. The reason for this rejection remains unclear.

The international cultural heritage organization Europa Nostra has identified the bathhouse as one of Europe's seven most endangered cultural heritages. " Valhallabadet has previously been assessed as particularly culturally and historically valuable through designation in Gothenburg's preservation program, partly for its gable walls decorated with glass mosaics by artist Nils Wedel. The preservation of Valhallabadet is considered to be in the public interest.

We want to convince the city that it is important to preserve it.

Laurie Neale, Architect and advisor at Europa Nostra

" The timeline for demolition and construction has not been announced.

For the people of Gothenburg, it means something that Valhalla remains.

Monica Bengtson, Vice chairperson of the architecture association Fasad

We are in a situation where we need to build a new bath.

Daniel Bernmar, Municipal councilor (Left Party)
