Bed bug incidents reported in Swedish hotel and train travel
Key Points
  • Two separate bed bug incidents occurred in Sweden in late January.
  • One incident involved a hotel stay in Östersund, and the other involved train travel from Malmö to Åre.
  • Formal complaints were filed, but many details remain unresolved.

In late January, a man from Karlskrona was traveling from Malmö to Åre, and live bed bugs were discovered in the sleeping compartment, according to multiple reports. Separately, a man checked into a hotel in Östersund for five nights in January, and after two nights, he woke up with intense itching. The man found and photographed a bed bug, then contacted the hotel manager, who offered him a new room.

The man was traveling with five other people on the train, though it is unclear if the two incidents are related or what specific hotel or train service was involved. In the aftermath, a complaint was filed with the General Complaints Board, but the outcome of that complaint and how the infestations were resolved by the establishments have not been confirmed. Additionally, any health or financial consequences for the individuals affected remain unknown.
