According to major media reports, the United States will intervene in the genocide case against Israel brought at the United Nations’ highest court by South Africa. The International Court of Justice is considering whether Israel’s military operation in Gaza to crush Hamas amounts to genocide under a treaty drawn up after World War II. South Africa accuses Israel of violating its obligations under the UN Genocide Convention in connection with the war in Gaza, which started with the Hamas attack in October 2023.

Israel has vehemently denied the allegations of genocide. The United States argues that the accusations are false and warns that a ruling against Israel could undermine international law. S.

S. , said that a finding against Israel would be a 'radical repudiation' of the court’s precedent. He added that such a decision would 'feed the perception that the court is simply just one more tool in the ongoing pro-Hamas lawfare campaign' against Israel.

Any party to the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide can intervene to contribute its assessment of the legal questions in the case. More than a dozen other countries have filed interventions in the Israel case, including Spain, the Netherlands and Ireland. Many countries take a different view to that of the United States.

Iceland's government has decided to join South Africa's case against Israel for genocide in Gaza at the International Court of Justice ICJ in The Hague. In the legal documents submitted on Wednesday, it says that Iceland condemns both Hamas' terrorist attack and Israel's military offensive, in addition to the tragic humanitarian situation in Gaza. Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrin Gunnarsdóttir said that 'with the joining of South Africa's case, we use our voice in support of international law and humanitarian law.

' The ICJ has issued a series of orders concerning Israel’s conduct in Gaza since South Africa filed its case in 2023, including telling the country to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide. S. and other countries' interventions on the court's final decision remains unclear, and the specific evidence South Africa has presented to support its genocide allegations against Israel has not been detailed publicly.
