Two prominent Liberal Party politicians in Uppsala have announced they will not seek re-election following their party's decision to open for government cooperation with the Sweden Democrats. According to SVT Uppland, Malin Sjöberg Högrell, chair of Liberal Women and regional councilor in Uppsala, and Jennie Claesson, municipal councilor, made their announcements ahead of a party vote on leadership. The resignations come after Liberal Party leader Simona Mohamsson stated she would open for cooperation with the Sweden Democrats, a move that reportedly stirred strong emotions within the party.
During an extraordinary party meeting on Sunday, a majority of Liberal delegates voted for Mohamsson to remain as party leader, with 95 voting in favor, 80 against, and eight abstaining. The two Uppsala politicians reportedly stated they would not stand in the next election if the party continues on its current path regarding cooperation with the Sweden Democrats.
