Key Points
  • Uppsala expands security guard program after positive evaluation
  • New areas include Kapellgärdet, Kvarngärdet, and others
  • Legislation supports expanded use of security guards

The municipality has had security guards in the city center since 2017. An evaluation in 2024 showed their presence has positive effects and contributes to an increased sense of safety, according to officials. New legislation gives municipalities greater opportunities to use security guards in crime prevention work.

The expanded area includes Kapellgärdet, Kvarngärdet, Källparken, Fyrishov's outer areas, Industristaden, the area around Fålhagsleden, the student area around Engelska parken, and the stretch between Akademiska sjukhuset and KAP. These areas were identified as needing more safety measures based on the municipality's safety survey and ongoing situation reports using the EST method, officials said.

The security guards are an important support in our preventive work. They contribute to creating calmer places and strengthen the safety of those who live, work and move in Uppsala.

Erik Pelling, Chairman of the Municipal Council (S)

Erik Pelling, Chairman of the Municipal Council, said: "The security guards are an important support in our preventive work. They contribute to creating calmer places and strengthen the safety of those who live, work and move in Uppsala." Ida Lindman, Safety and Sustainability Director, added: "By using security guards more strategically, we can prevent problems and contribute to more people feeling safe in their everyday lives." Security guards can work visibly and preventively by creating contact with people, reducing disturbances, and early detection of situations that risk leading to crime, according to the municipality.

By using security guards more strategically, we can prevent problems and contribute to more people feeling safe in their everyday lives.
