Key Points
  • A union is suing SIS for firing a whistleblower.
  • The whistleblower reported mistreatment and abuse at a Stockholm facility.
  • SIS says the dismissal was justified.

The union Akademikerförbundet is suing the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (SIS) after it fired Michael Himmlegaard, the former head of the SIS facility Rebecka-hemmet in Stockholm. Himmlegaard raised alarms last year that girls at the facility were subjected to mistreatment, sexual abuse, and indefinite isolation. According to the union's chief lawyer Mikael Smeds, SIS violated employment protection laws by dismissing Himmlegaard for, among other things, criticizing the authority on social media.

SIS maintains that it was the right decision to fire Himmlegaard.
