Unauthorized Banksy Exhibition Opens in Manchester, Raises Funds for Hospital
Key Points
  • An unauthorized Banksy exhibition opened in Manchester on March 12, 2026, featuring recreations of his works.
  • The exhibition aims to raise funds for a cancer hospital and has attracted millions of visitors in Europe.
  • Future tour dates are to be announced, with the next stop in Turku, Finland, starting April 17th.

The exhibition 'The Mystery of Banksy - A Genius Mind' opened for the first time in the UK yesterday in Manchester at Depot Mayfield near Piccadilly Station. It includes recreations of iconic works such as Girl With Balloon, Devolved Parliament, a London Underground carriage, and a seven-foot elephant installation. The exhibition is an interactive art experience that provides a comprehensive overview of Banksy's works, presenting over 150 works covering his entire career to date, including graffiti, photographs, sculptures, video installations, and prints on various materials.

These works were created and compiled specifically for this exhibition. Banksy, a British graffiti artist and painter born in Bristol, began his street art in Bristol in the 2000s. The exhibition is not officially authorized due to Banksy's anonymity and his principle that 'Copyright is for losers', in line with his motto.

We are absolutely thrilled to be the chosen charity for The Mystery of Banksy, A Genius Mind exhibition. It is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us and one that will ultimately benefit cancer patients both now and in the future.

Louise Hadley, Chief Executive of The Christie Charity

It aims to raise funds for Manchester's Christie Cancer Hospital, supporting a new Total Body PET-CT scanner. Louise Hadley, Chief Executive of The Christie Charity, said, 'We are absolutely thrilled to be the chosen charity for The Mystery of Banksy, A Genius Mind exhibition. ' Standard adult tickets start at £22, with free entry for under 6s and discounts for 7-16 year-olds, seniors, and NHS workers, and the exhibition runs until June 28th.

5 million visitors across 36 venues in Europe and beyond, and it is coming to Turku, Finland, where it will be held in an old factory hall at Telakkaranta starting April 17th and open daily until October 25th. Future dates and locations for the exhibition are to be announced. Reuters reported on March 13th that they have finally solved the mystery, identifying Banksy as Robin Gunningham, later known as David Jones, but Banksy commented through his company that he does not comment on the revelation.

The true identity of Banksy has not been officially confirmed, and it is unknown how much funding has been raised for the Christie Cancer Hospital so far.
