Umeå municipality has started its annual street cleaning significantly earlier than normal, with operations beginning on Västra Esplanaden on Monday, March 16, 2026. According to SVT Västerbotten, this marks the second consecutive year of record-early cleaning in the northern Swedish city.
Per Hilmersson, street operations manager for Umeå municipality, described the early start as "a sign of spring." The municipality is beginning with small-scale, targeted operations in areas with heavy sand accumulation, primarily to improve air quality by removing dust particles.

Last year, street cleaning in Umeå occurred a month earlier than normal during week 13, setting a record. This year's cleaning is expected to match that early timing, with full-scale operations scheduled to begin next week.
Daniel Södö, street engineer for Umeå municipality, explained that the municipality has now taken over responsibility for Västra Esplanaden from the Swedish Transport Administration and will focus more on air quality improvements. "We're cleaning now to remove dust particles. This will be an incredible improvement for Umeå residents," Södö said.

Spring arrived in Umeå on March 3, though Hilmersson noted that weather setbacks are still possible with cold nights continuing. The municipality does not have fixed dates for street cleaning but cleans as soon as conditions allow.
