A Ukrainian family visiting Stockholm was arrested on Sunday afternoon after attempting to build a makeshift ramp to escape a locked gate in the city's historic Old Town district. According to police reports, the family had parked their car inside a gated area near the Finnish Church at Slottsbacken in Gamla stan. When they returned later, the exit gate was locked.

Instead of waiting for assistance, the family reportedly began breaking up cobblestones and damaging an old stone staircase in an attempt to construct a ramp for their vehicle. Police officer Viktor Adolphson of Södermalmspolisen described the incident as unusual, stating the family appeared to be trying to 'MacGyver-build' their way out.

The family, consisting of two adults and children, was arrested on suspicion of gross vandalism due to the damage caused to the historic construction. Because the family are foreign citizens from Ukraine, police determined there was a qualified risk of flight, which justified the arrest. The family was interrogated on site, and while the exact consequences remain unclear, police indicate it could result in fines or potentially lead to prosecution.

Officer Adolphson noted that despite many years of service, he had never encountered such an attempt to escape a parking situation, calling it 'a bit overoptimistic.' The incident occurred in one of Stockholm's most culturally sensitive historical areas.
