Ukrainian graduate blames AI for 400 job rejections
Key Points
  • Karyna Lohvynenko applied for over 400 jobs, received only five interviews.
  • She believes AI screening tools are responsible for most rejections.
  • Her qualifications include UN ambassadorship and work with Ukrainian government.

Karyna Lohvynenko, who recently graduated from Cardiff Metropolitan University in business and management, has applied for over 400 jobs but received only five interviews, according to multiple reports. She believes AI screening tools are filtering out her applications before a human sees them. Lohvynenko said she often does not hear back at all and feels her applications fall into a 'void'.

Lohvynenko's background includes being appointed as a student ambassador at the United Nations, working for the office of President Zelensky's wife Olena, and representing Ukraine on a national council for young people. She also worked with British and American councils and as an ambassador for the King's Trust. Before the Russian invasion in 2022, she was offered scholarships to six US universities, but moved with her family to Wales after the war began.

On the five occasions she secured an interview, all were conducted through an 'AI interviewer' or chatbot. According to Daily Mail - News, Lohvynenko described AI as one of the main issues, noting that tailoring her CV may not match the exact keywords AI seeks. She has been advised to try smaller firms but believes those positions often go to interns. Her ideal role would be in government, and she dreams of returning to Ukraine.
