UK running events face measurement errors in Derby and Coventry

Key Points
  • The Derby 10k course was approximately 400 meters too short, while the Coventry Half Marathon was 512 meters too long.
  • Both events have launched investigations and reviews to address the measurement errors.
  • Corrective measures include updated finish times and half-price entry offers for Coventry runners, but Derby-specific actions are unclear.

The Derby 10k race course was approximately 400 meters too short, according to a verification measurement by the Association of UK Course Measurers (AUKCM). The Coventry Half Marathon route was longer than the intended 13.1 miles by 512 meters, an investigation by event organiser Run For All found.

The Derby 10k course was altered this year due to flood defence work, the Derby County Community Trust stated. In February, the Derby County Community Trust announced a section of the race, between 8km and 9km, had been re-routed due to ongoing flood defence work. The Derby 10k course was required to have an official remeasure by a member of the Association of UK Course Measurers (AUKCM), the Trust confirmed. The Derby 10k start and finish line should have been altered from its previous position following the re-measure, according to the Trust.

The Derby County Community Trust launched a review of the course after runners raised concerns about the distance. The Derby 10k has been running since 2002 and is sponsored by HUUB Design. More than 3,000 people took part in the Derby 10k, which raises funds for the Derby County Community Trust.

Runners who completed the Coventry Half Marathon will receive an updated finish time from the 13.1-mile point, Run For All announced. Runners of the Coventry Half Marathon will receive an offer of half-price entry for the 2027 event as an apology, the organiser said.

Run For All will run a full internal investigation to ensure the error does not happen again at a future event. The Derby County Community Trust's review aims to address the measurement discrepancy, though specific corrective actions to prevent similar errors in future races have not been detailed.

It remains unknown whether the Derby 10k organisers will offer compensation or adjusted results to affected runners, and how many runners participated in the Coventry Half Marathon has not been disclosed.
