Two soldiers to court after Rena camp shooting accident
Key Points
  • Two soldiers face court after a soldier was injured during a military exercise at Rena camp in October 2024.
  • Police cited inadequate protective berm and poor planning; fines were issued but rejected.
  • The Armed Forces cover legal costs and have implemented safety measures; the case is set for late May.

According to police, the protective berm was not thick enough. Police Inspector Henning Klauseie said there were inadequate assessments in planning and execution of the shooting. The Armed Forces issued a fine of 100,000 kroner in January for the accident.

The two inspectors also received fines of 10,000 kroner each, but refused to accept them. The defense lawyer, John Christian Elden, represents one of the soldiers and speaks for both. According to NRK Innlandet, Elden described it as strange to go after individual subordinate military personnel who carried out an exercise in accordance with their training.

The Army is covering the legal costs for the soldiers. Lieutenant Colonel Lars Ø. Strøm said the Armed Forces cover the expenses because they are related to the soldiers' service.

According to NRK Innlandet, Strøm described that the Armed Forces have taken measures after the accident, including clarifying safety rules and strengthening training. The case will be heard in Hedmarken and Østerdal District Court at the end of May.
