Police area chief Daniel Norlander said an old gang conflict in Biskopsgården is one of the theories behind the double murder. The alarm about the shooting came in just before midnight, triggering a large police operation. Residents testified there were many police in the area before the incident, but Norlander would not comment on whether police knew about murder plans.
According to Aftonbladet, police theory is that the murdered men were not the targets, but police would not comment. The third man, in his 30s, escaped unharmed and was questioned by police. The shooting took place near a parking lot; two cars hit by bullets were seized for examination, and police will investigate if it was caught on camera.
Since 2012, around 15 people have been murdered and a large number subjected to serious violent crimes in Gothenburg, per Göteborgs-Posten. On March 29, a 20-year-old man was shot and injured in Flatås, linked to the gang conflict. Since the turn of the year, there have been at least three shootings in the Gothenburg area and eight explosions, some very powerful and several at apartment buildings.
Newspaper Göteborgs-Posten said the attack could be linked to gang rivalry and a revenge attack for an earlier shooting. Despite these incidents, Sweden saw a drop in killings in 2024: 92 cases of deadly violence, 29 fewer than 2023, per the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå). Police attributed the decline to an increased ability to 'prevent and deter' violent acts.
