Two killed, several injured in Athens shooting spree
Key Points
  • Two killed and several wounded in separate Athens shootings, plus a hunting accident in Preveza critically injuring a teenager.
  • Rare wave of gun violence including a former employee attack raises public safety concerns.
  • Police investigations ongoing across all incidents; no arrests reported yet.

Greek authorities have confirmed that a rare shooting at a shipping company in Glyfada left at least one person dead and two others wounded. The victim was identified by a police officer as a relative of the owner of European Navigation. According to police sources and state broadcaster ERT, the gunman was a former employee who stormed the premises. Police said he remained inside the building after the shooting, which led to the deployment of a police negotiator. According to news reports, fire engines and ambulances were stationed outside, and police cordoned off a wider area around the company's headquarters.

In a separate incident, unidentified gunmen opened fire outside a cafe in the Thrakomakedones area of Athens, according to multiple media reports. Those reports confirmed that the two victims were Albanian citizens, with one killed and the other injured. Police officers were dispatched to the scene and have opened an investigation, authorities said. Authorities stated that no arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear. Unofficial sources later suggested that a second person may have been injured, but this has not been officially confirmed.

Earlier, in Aghios Dimitrios, according to police, a shooting outside a grill restaurant left a 39-year-old owner and his 70-year-old father wounded in the legs. A police account described a luxury SUV carrying four people stopping in front of the business, and one occupant calling the owner outside before shooting both men. The attacker then entered the restaurant, assaulted another person, and fled, according to the same account. Crime scene investigators later recovered four 9mm shell casings from the pavement, police said. Research sources reported that the injured owner may be linked to violent soccer fan groups, though these allegations remain unverified.

The Swedish newspaper Barometern-OT reported that a shooting had occurred in Athens and that several people had been injured, providing the earliest public signal of the day's violence.

In an unrelated tragedy in northwestern Greece, ERT reported that a 16-year-old boy was in critical condition after a hunting firearm accidentally discharged in a village in the Ziros municipality of Preveza. According to ERT, the teenager had taken his father's flobert-type rifle and gone into the family yard to shoot birds; he slipped and fell, causing the weapon to fire and strike him in the head. The boy was initially taken by ambulance to Arta General Hospital, where he received first aid and was intubated, before being transferred to the University Hospital of Ioannina, ERT said. ERT reported that he arrived Thursday afternoon and underwent hours-long surgery, after which he was admitted to the intensive care unit. The medical team told the press that they were cautiously optimistic but stressed that his condition remains critical, adding that several more days of observation are needed before a clearer prognosis can be given. Police in Preveza have launched an inquiry into the accident, focusing on how the minor accessed a loaded firearm.

All four cases remain under active investigation, authorities said.
