Crime & justiceCrime
Key Points
  • Two killed, three injured in Dallas shooting; suspect arrested, not random.
  • Hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship MV Hondius; evacuations planned, mixed signals from Spain.
  • Wave of suspicious objects across Sweden all deemed harmless.

The suspect tried to flee but was apprehended a couple of kilometers from the scene, according to police. Local Police Chief Roberto Arredondo said the incident was not a random act and that there was a known business relationship between those involved. Police said there is no danger to the public.

Three sick passengers suspected of being infected with hantavirus are to be evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius, the World Health Organization said. A total of three people have previously died in the outbreak on board and another confirmed infected person is receiving intensive care in Johannesburg. Those evacuated will be put ashore in Cape Verde, from where they will be flown further, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

According to WHO, this opens the possibility for MV Hondius to leave the island nation and go to the Canary Islands or the Netherlands. From Spain, the message is mixed: the health department in Madrid says no decision has been made yet, but they also report that the ship may be allowed to dock. Swedish police responded to a wave of suspicious objects on Monday, all of which were later deemed harmless.

A person reported seeing a dangerous object in a forest area in Stockholm during the morning, but after inspection it was found to be harmless. In Köping, police were alerted to a suspicious object in the Östanås residential area on Monday afternoon, cordoned off the area, and later determined the object was harmless. In Upplands-Bro, north of Stockholm, a suspicious object was found on Monday morning; the bomb squad examined it and found it to be harmless, and all cordons have been lifted.

In Bro, police cordoned off an area due to an object that could not be dismissed as harmless, according to police press spokesperson Anna Lärk. The object was a type of bag or pouch with some kind of content, found at an apartment building. The national bomb squad was on site, and residents in a nearby apartment building were asked to stay indoors.

At 11:38, police announced the object was harmless, and all cordons will be lifted. In a separate incident in Kungsängen, two floors of an apartment building were evacuated on Monday morning after a suspected dangerous object was discovered. Police and the national bomb squad investigated the object, which was deemed live.

A large area was cordoned off and residents in the vicinity were accommodated. At half past one in the afternoon, police announced several objects had been checked; about an hour later, technical investigations were completed and cordons lifted, allowing residents to return home. A VMA (important message to the public) was issued but was lifted during the afternoon.

Police cannot yet say what type of object it is. A suspect has been arrested, a man in his 30s, suspected of violation of the law on flammable and explosive goods, according to Daniel Wikdahl, police press spokesperson. According to information to Aftonbladet, the arrested man is suspected of manufacturing explosive charges used in the recent wave of violence.

Police will not comment on possible connections to previous acts. A preliminary investigation into attempted gross general devastation and gross crime against the law on flammable and explosive objects has been initiated. The operation affected the Uppsala Marathon, which took place during the morning; the organizer said they would need to change the course.

Charges have been filed in connection with an explosion at a villa in Lövstalöt on December 2, which prosecutor Karin Koci says is linked to the ongoing gang conflict in Uppsala. An explosive charge detonated while a person was in the property. Evidence includes surveillance footage, witness statements, communication between suspects, and technical evidence.

Koci said they have a good picture of what happened and can describe the course of events. A 15-year-old and an 18-year-old are charged with gross public devastation and violation of the law on flammable and explosive goods. The 18-year-old is also charged with placing an explosive charge in an apartment building in Kungsängen, Upplands-Bro, on November 20.

No one was injured in that incident but residents had to be evacuated. The charges for the Kungsängen incident are attempted gross public devastation and violation of the law on flammable and explosive goods. In other incidents, police conducted a check of an object in a drained pond at Hovdala in Skåne.

A man in his 25s was injured in a workplace accident in Enköping and was taken by ambulance to hospital with currently unknown injuries; police have filed a report. Author Gunnar Kieri has passed away, his family told Kulturnytt in Sveriges Radio. Kieri grew up in the Swedish Torne Valley and had Torne Valley Finnish as his mother tongue.

In a 1988 interview with TT, he said he was beaten by his teacher at school when he spoke Finnish. He is often described as the author who first put the Torne Valley on the Swedish literary map. Kieri debuted in 1972 with '1:a arbetskompaniet' and wrote 15 novels.
