Two bosses on trial for wage theft of 879,000 kroner
Key Points
  • Two bosses on trial for gross wage theft of 879,000 kroner; both pleaded not guilty.
  • Victim Sergiu Tincaburov worked 760 hours, owed nearly 200,000 kroner, faced hardship.
  • Defendant Remigijus Daugela has history of wage theft and multiple company failures.

Sergiu Tincaburov, one of the victims, worked 760 hours from April to mid-July 2023 and was owed nearly 200,000 kroner. According to NRK Østfold, Tincaburov described having to seek food aid from the Church City Mission and take out loans to survive. He walked over a mile to report the case at Eidsvoll police station.

The victims' lawyer, Ivar André Holm, said the wage guarantee from Nav has paid some but not all, including overtime and additional hours. The prosecution will seek compensation.

They are very concerned that the injustice they were subjected to is rectified. This was a very demanding period for several of them. Some had to take out loans.

One defendant, Remigijus Daugela, was convicted in 2011 for paying workers only 28 kroner per hour. He has been involved in over 30 companies since coming to Norway in 2008, 21 of which ended in bankruptcy or compulsory dissolution. Daugela has received bankruptcy quarantine three times, barring him from leading limited companies. Prosecutors allege he secretly ran companies through straw persons.

The other defendant is an Estonian who has been in company roles with Daugela since 2022. Tincaburov first contacted the Estonian defendant after finding the job on Facebook. The case has grown since the first indictment in December; the two were remanded in custody in February on new charges. According to NRK Østfold, police advocate Isak Damman cited risk of reoffending for the remand. The defendants appealed but remain in custody. The Borgarting Court of Appeal wrote that the new charges appear related to the indictment.

Here there is a lot, including overtime and additional hours, that are not included.

It is because of risk of reoffending.
