A walker fell approximately 15 meters (50 feet) on Tryfan mountain in Eryri (Snowdonia), sustaining injuries, according to multiple reports. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 1, morning after an overnight camp near the top of Tryfan, as reported by major media. The walker and a friend were descending the North Ridge of Tryfan and strayed from the main path into Waterfall Gully, and the walker slipped while down-climbing a steep water course, tumbling approximately 15 meters. The injured walker sustained multiple injuries and was unable to continue, prompting an emergency call. Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue dispatched two teams: one to the injured walker and another to assist their companion. The Coastguard helicopter was called from Caernarfon base but could not access the location for winch extraction due to position and adverse weather conditions. A technical rope rescue system was built to lower the casualty in a stretcher with two attendants down to the main path, followed by a stretcher carry to a waiting ambulance at the roadside, and the casualty was passed directly to WAST (Welsh Ambulance Service Trust) for transport to hospital.
In a separate incident, a climber fell 10 meters (33 feet) while climbing the 'Gashed Crag' route on Tryfan mountain in north Wales, according to major media. The climber was part of a group of three climbing the 'Gashed Crag' route in Eryri (Snowdonia). The climber fell straight past their partner, who was managing the rope, and the partner held them, suffering severe rope burns. The maritime coastguard rescue team was called to lift the team members onto a hill before the climbers were raised to the summit with a technical rope rescue system. Once checked over, the casualty was fitted with a confidence rope and made a 'hands free' descent of Tryfan, according to Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team.
Two well-equipped walkers were descending the North Ridge of Tryfan and lost the main path. One of the pair began to down-climb a steep water course but slipped and took a tumbling fall of approx 15m sustaining injuries. Their friend was unable to safely descend to them so called for assistance. Two hasty parties were deployed, one to the injured walker to assess their requirements whilst their friend was extracted to safe ground with a technical rope rescue (TRR) system and then taken to Oggie Base. Due to the casualty's injuries and difficult location the Coastguard helicopter was tasked but was unable to access the casualty's location for winch extraction. A TRR (technical rope rescue) system was built and the casualty lowered in a stretcher with two attendants down to the main path. Multiple back-roped stances were established to cover the descent down to the road where the casualty was passed directly to WAST for transport to hospital.
Once checked over, the casualty was fitted with a confidence rope and then made an impressive 'hands free' descent of Tryfan.
