  • Turkey returns to F1 calendar from 2027 under five-year deal
  • 2027 schedule expected to have 24 races, per single report
  • Portugal also joins calendar, replacing Netherlands and Barcelona

Turkey will return to the Formula 1 calendar from 2027 under a five-year deal, according to multiple reports. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the contract, which runs from 2027 to 2031.

The 2027 schedule is expected to feature 24 races, according to a single media report. A slot opened up after Zandvoort confirmed this year's grand prix would be their last and Barcelona moved to a rotational agreement with Spa-Francorchamps. A two-year deal with Portugal took one of the vacancies, according to a single source, meaning Turkey and Portugal will replace the Netherlands and Barcelona on the 2027 calendar.

Istanbul Park is a 5.33km circuit that last hosted a race in 2021, with Turkey long pushing for a return. Turkey has hosted nine grands prix in total, debuting in 2005. Lewis Hamilton sealed his record-equalling seventh F1 world championship at Istanbul Park in 2020, while Valtteri Bottas won the last race there in 2021.

A host of countries have shown interest in hosting a race, such as South Africa, Rwanda and South Korea, according to major media reports. Madrid will host a race for the first time in September 2025 with a semi-permanent street circuit. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are likely to be re-included in the 2027 calendar after being cancelled in 2025 due to ongoing turmoil in the Gulf, according to a single source.

The exact date of the 2027 Turkish Grand Prix has not been confirmed, and it is unclear whether the Istanbul Park circuit will require any modifications. The financial value of the five-year deal has not been disclosed. Other countries still in contention for future F1 races include South Africa, Rwanda, and South Korea, while the rotational agreement between Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps is expected to alternate the Spanish and Belgian grands prix.
