Trump Threatens Cuba Then Calls for Talks
Key Points
  • Trump threatened Cuba is 'next' but also called for talks on Truth Social.
  • Cuba faces blackouts and fuel shortages amid the US embargo.
  • Cuban President Díaz-Canel confirmed early-stage talks involving Raúl Castro.

At a Saudi-backed business forum in Miami, Donald Trump said 'Cuba is next, by the way,' then jokingly asked the media not to report the remark, according to major media reports. The comment echoed his repeated threats of military action against Cuba to force reforms. In late January, Trump threatened tariffs on any country that sells or provides oil to Cuba.

' This contradiction highlights the ambiguity of US policy toward Cuba: whether it is pursuing diplomatic talks or aggressive action. Cuba has not received any fuel shipments in the past three months due to the embargo, and the country experienced two nationwide blackouts in the last week, leaving millions without electricity. The US embargo continues to cripple Cuba's economy, exacerbating the crisis.

I campaigned on the fact, peace through strength, I said you'll never have to use it but sometimes you have to use it.

Díaz-Canel made the remarks in a videotaped interview with Spanish leftist leader Pablo Iglesias, who was in Cuba as part of a delegation of 600 activists from 33 countries delivering humanitarian aid. Former Cuban President Raúl Castro is involved in the talks between Cuba and the United States, Díaz-Canel said.

Trump also threatened that the US might reduce its budget for or presence in NATO, saying the US does not need to protect other NATO countries because they did not support the US in the Iran war. He said it was a 'huge mistake' that NATO was not present in the Iran war. Trump previously asked other NATO countries to help open the Strait of Hormuz.
