Key Points
  • Donald Trump threatens NATO withdrawal and criticizes allies over Iran, with congressional approval required for U.S. exit.
  • Signals of a potential end to the Iran war spur a global stock market rally, including surges in Stockholm, U.S., and Asian markets.
  • Illegal deer dumping and killings are under investigation in Sweden, the U.S., and Europe, with cases involving cruelty, waste, and legal violations.

Donald Trump stated he is strongly considering leaving NATO, declaring that withdrawal is more than just a thought. He said he has never had any faith in the alliance, calling it a paper tiger. Trump criticized the UK specifically, accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of not wanting to participate in the war against Iran and questioning the British navy's capacity as outdated with non-functional aircraft carriers. He also claimed other NATO member countries have not supported the U.S. in the conflict with Iran. However, for the U.S. to formally withdraw from NATO, congressional approval is required.

Trump said on Tuesday that he believes the war with Iran will be over in two weeks, and Iran announced it is prepared to end the war if the country is not attacked again. These statements contributed to a surge in global financial markets. The Stockholm stock exchange surged at opening on Wednesday after signals from the U.S. and Iran that the war may be nearing an end. The broad index OMXSPI rose 2.6 percent and the large-cap index OMXS30 increased 2.7 percent. Among large companies, Boliden led with a 5 percent gain, followed by Atlas Copco and Epiroc at around 4 percent. The news also caused U.S. stock markets to jump, and Asian markets followed on Wednesday morning.

The specific signals from the U.S. and Iran that prompted the market rally have not been officially detailed, and there is no public confirmation of ongoing peace talks between the nations.

In Sweden, remains of animals were found on a turning area on the E6 highway, with police alerted by a member of the public. When a patrol arrived, they confirmed someone had left seven dead roe deer in a ditch. Separately, a macabre discovery was made by a private person in Vä outside Kristianstad, where three garbage bags each containing one dead roe deer were found at the intersection of Riksväg 19 and Sigridslundsvägen. According to the alarm call, the animals were whole.

Police have been on site in Vä and filed a report for a hunting offense regarding the dead roe deer. Contact has been made with hunters in the area who report that there is no hunting in the vicinity at the moment and that roe deer are not handled in this way.

Who is responsible for dumping the seven dead roe deer on the E6 and the three in Vä, and what their motives were, remains unknown.

A similar case occurred in Arkansas, where Ronnie Vaughn found dead deer dumped in a ditch on Craighead County Road 910 on Saturday, Oct. 5. The dumped deer included one buck, five does, and one fawn, with only the buck beheaded, and they were left to rot for a couple of days. Dumping the deer violates codes for wasting edible portions of wildlife and littering within 50 yards of a road or in state waters, with violations carrying penalties from $200 to $2,000 and possible jail time. County crews buried the deer on Monday, Oct. 7.

In Oregon, the East Valley Fish and Wildlife Team uncovered a massive illegal hunting operation. A suspect, a convicted felon not allowed to own firearms, was found with heads and meat from deer, elk, bears, and ducks. The suspect admitted to illegally killing deer at the Sandy River Delta in 2025 and purposefully ignoring hunting laws. Police found stolen items and dangerous weapons, including a stolen sign, a scoped rifle, a stolen 9mm handgun, spotlights, crossbows, and over 70 grams of methamphetamine. A second suspect's home yielded more illegal meat and another deer head.

In Kansas, a landowner in northeast Kansas found several dead deer with wounds from a small-bore rifle. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks game wardens reported seven deer found dead in Washington County, shot with a small caliber rifle and left to lay. The deer were killed outside Hanover, with one carcass less than 250 yards from two residences, and were likely killed on Jan. 2 or 3. Kansas law requires reasonable effort to retrieve wounded or dead game, with violations as class C misdemeanors punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Iran is prepared to end the war if the country is not attacked again.

In Germany, a hobby hunter in Lübben, Brandenburg, massacred a deer in a cruel manner during a tracking hunt. A video shows the deer being chased into a pond, stabbed repeatedly with a knife, and pushed underwater. PETA filed a criminal complaint, but the Cottbus public prosecutor's office declined to initiate proceedings, with PETA appealing the decision.

The outcome of PETA's appeal is currently unknown, as is the status of investigations into the illegal deer killings in Arkansas, Oregon, Kansas, and other cases.

In Dorset, England, Dorset Police are investigating the killing of nine deer found at two locations at the end of April 2015. The deer had dog bites on their rears, insides removed, and throats cut, with no signs of butchering, suggesting the attacks were for 'fun'.

Scientific studies show recreational hunting is not suited for sustained wildlife population control.

In a traffic accident in Sweden, a truck and a car collided head-on on the E10 between Töre and Morjärv in Kalix municipality, according to Trafikverket. One person is injured but is reported to be awake and able to talk, according to police. SVT Norrbotten reports that it involves a tanker truck and that a total of three people are involved. In Gothenburg, a battery on a truck exploded in Torslanda on Hisingen, with rescue services and police alerted to the scene.

In Umeå, an 11-year-old boy has been taken into custody according to LVU after suspicions that he followed a friend who took on a murder assignment. According to the administrative court's ruling, the 11-year-old followed his friend but later regretted it out of fear of being killed himself. The police investigation indicates the 11-year-old was in debt to the assignors, who also threatened him.
