The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has proposed to the government that the procured flight route between Östersund and Umeå should be discontinued. The proposal concerns procured air traffic across the entire country starting from October 2027. According to the Transport Administration, the allocations for procured traffic are very strained, forcing them to make cuts.
If the allocations are not increased, certain routes must disappear. The Östersund–Umeå route has been procured by the Transport Administration since 2014 and is one of five flight routes proposed to be discontinued. The Transport Administration believes the reasons for continued traffic on the route are very weak, as there are alternatives and passenger numbers are slowly decreasing.
The specific alternatives to the Östersund–Umeå flight route have not been detailed. The government will now make the decision on the matter, though the timeline for this decision is unclear. Aftonbladet reports that the investigation is now out for consultation.
