Trafikverket pauses double-track project through Helsingborg

Key Points
  • Trafikverket pauses double-track project through Helsingborg, last section of West Coast Line
  • Project reconsideration may drop new station in city center; Helsingborg city concerned
  • Maintenance work on Rååbanan from June 9 to July 7 with no trains

The double-track expansion would increase capacity, strengthen commuting and freight flows, and contribute to growth in Skåne and along the west coast. The section is important for Sweden to meet EU requirements within the TEN-T network.

Meanwhile, Trafikverket is carrying out work on the Rååbanan between Helsingborg and Teckomatorp from June 9 to July 7, with no trains running on that section. According to research, the work includes ballast cleaning to improve track bearing capacity and stability, using a 350-meter-long ballast cleaning train processing about 50,000 tons of ballast. Around 100 people and heavy machinery will be working during the closure. Train traffic between Ramlösa station and Teckomatorp will be replaced by buses or rerouted.

On December 3, Trafikverket decided to reduce speed from 180 km/h to 70 km/h on the line between Lund and Helsingborg for safety reasons due to multiple rail defects. Skånetrafiken can only operate one Pågatåg per hour on the Lund-Helsingborg section due to the speed reduction. Carina Zachau (M), regional councilor and chair of the public transport committee, criticized Trafikverket for poor maintenance planning. According to a press release, Zachau said: "Last night we were told that the maintenance is so poor that it is dangerous to release traffic on the tracks faster than 70 km/h. Yesterday we drove at 180 km/h and today we are not allowed to. How long have the tracks been substandard? What does it look like in the rest of Skåne? We need answers from Trafikverket on these questions."
