Trader Joe's sued over coffee caffeine claims
Key Points
  • Lawsuit filed in California on Thursday
  • Coffee has 51% caffeine of regular blend
  • Not labeled as decaf or half-caff

The lawsuit, filed in California on Thursday, accuses Trader Joe's of misleading customers by marketing its French Roast Low Acid coffee as fully caffeinated when, according to the lawsuit, tests showed it contained half the caffeine of a regular blend. According to the lawsuit, the coffee has 51% of the caffeine of Trader Joe's Dark French Roast coffee. The suit argues that it is standard practice not to indicate caffeine amounts on coffee labels unless a process is used to reduce caffeine, but that the French Roast Low Acid coffee does not disclose it is 'decaf' or 'half-caff'.

The lawsuit alleges that Trader Joe's deceived customers into believing the coffee had significantly more caffeine than it did, leading them to purchase the product believing it was fully caffeinated when it was not. The lawsuit seeks to bar Trader Joe's from unlawful sales and marketing of the product and demands monetary damages. ' Trader Joe's has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

It is so common that it is now cliché that coffee drinkers depend on the caffeine contained therein to provide them with the energy they need to get through the day.

Lawsuit, Plaintiffs

In a separate case, Trader Joe's is also facing a lawsuit from a Portland woman who claims she found a fingertip from a rubber glove in a bottle of orange juice. According to the lawsuit, the woman expressed concern that a human hand was severed and part of the pulp she had been drinking.

For example, full caffeinated coffee does not have any special labeling denoting that it is fully caffeinated, but 'decaf' and 'half-caff' coffees are labelled as such.

Lawsuit, Plaintiffs

Concerned that the human hand that was in the tip of the glove was also severed and was part of the pulp she had been periodically drinking.
