Key Points
  • Flights through Middle Eastern hubs canceled due to conflict, stranding tourists in Thailand
  • Travel insurance often excludes war coverage, leaving families to pay high costs themselves
  • Airlines are operating reduced schedules with no clear timeline for full resumption

A family from the UK is marooned in Thailand after their return flights were canceled due to the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. Carolyn Jones said she was gifted a 'holiday of a lifetime' by her son Jamie for her 55th birthday. Jamie, who was injured in the Liverpool FC parade crash, funded the holiday with compensation he received, according to Carolyn.

Carolyn, Jamie, and youngest son Sean, who has autism, were scheduled to fly home on March 10, but the flight was canceled three days prior and rescheduled for March 17, which was also canceled. The family's travel insurance policy does not cover war, forcing them to pay for hotel expenses themselves, Carolyn said. Carolyn, who is medically retired, said she is running out of pain medication she cannot find in Bangkok.

Carolyn said: 'We desperately need to get home but we are stuck here in Thailand. ' Etihad Airways said in a statement it resumed a 'limited commercial flight schedule' on March 6, including between Abu Dhabi and Bangkok. ' Another family from France is stuck in Thailand due to the conflict.

Sébastien and Patricia went to Thailand for their honeymoon with their two children. With airspace closures, they face paying 11,000 euros to return home. Patricia said: 'We don't know anything.

' A British couple, Laura and Paul Webster, are stranded in Phuket after Emirates flights via Dubai were canceled. Mrs. Webster said: 'We've got work, we've got kids.

' She described it as a 'holiday from hell' and noted their travel agent advised them to 'fend for themselves' as insurance does not cover war. ' Alain Altmeyer from France is also stranded, unable to find a flight home. He said: 'All flights are canceled, because they pass through the Middle East.

' He has serious health issues and was scammed after buying a flight from a ghost company. The total number of stranded tourists and their national breakdown has not been disclosed.
