Key Points
  • Tottenham are 16th, one point above relegation, with nine games left.
  • Tudor's team lost four straight, including 5-2 to Atletico Madrid.
  • Van de Ven linked to Liverpool and Chelsea amid relegation fears.

Tottenham Hotspur are 16th in the Premier League table, one point above the relegation zone, after a disastrous season that saw Thomas Frank sacked after eight months and Igor Tudor appointed as interim manager. The club have nine league games remaining to avoid relegation.

Tottenham's crisis deepened as they lost four consecutive games under Igor Tudor, including a 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. During that match, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky started ahead of Guglielmo Vicario and was substituted by Tudor, highlighting the team's instability. The club's poor form has raised fears of relegation, with only nine league games left to secure their Premier League status. Tudor's appointment was meant to steady the ship, but results have worsened, leaving fans anxious about the club's top-flight future. The defeat to Atletico Madrid exposed defensive frailties, and Tudor's decision to replace Kinsky added to the sense of chaos. Tottenham have now lost five of their last six matches in all competitions, and their goal difference has plummeted. The team's morale appears low, and there are reports of dressing room unrest. With nine games remaining, Tottenham face a tough run-in that includes matches against Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool. Survival is far from guaranteed, and the club's hierarchy is already planning for potential relegation scenarios.

It looks that way.

Amid Tottenham's struggles, defender Micky van de Ven has emerged as a potential transfer target for top clubs. Van de Ven joined Tottenham in 2023 from Wolfsburg for £43 million, but his future is uncertain if the club is relegated. Liverpool, who missed out on signing Marc Guehi in January, are reportedly interested. According to Metro - Main, Jason McAteer described van de Ven as a potential bargain if Tottenham go down, noting that Liverpool need another centre-half after injuries to their defenders. Tim Sherwood also believes van de Ven would be a suitable target for Liverpool. However, Dean Saunders advised Liverpool against signing van de Ven, questioning his football intelligence and ability to read the game, comparing him unfavourably to Rio Ferdinand. This disagreement reflects differing expert opinions on van de Ven's quality. Liverpool's defensive injury crisis has made a new centre-back a priority, and van de Ven's pace and ball-playing ability could be attractive, but doubts remain about his consistency. Van de Ven has been one of Tottenham's better performers this season, but his form has dipped along with the team's. A move to Liverpool could revitalize his career, but the price tag may be a sticking point. If Tottenham are relegated, a release clause or reduced fee could facilitate a transfer. Liverpool's recruitment team is reportedly monitoring the situation closely.

Chelsea are also in the race for van de Ven. According to Metro - Main, Joe Cole described van de Ven as a 'brilliant addition' for Chelsea, citing his pace and one-on-one defending as ideal for their high line. Chelsea are sixth in the Premier League table, six points outside the top four with seven games remaining. They have also struggled recently, losing 8-2 on aggregate to PSG in the Champions League first knockout round and losing their last two league games against Newcastle United and Everton. The club's own instability could affect their ability to attract top talent. Chelsea's defensive issues have been evident, and van de Ven could provide a long-term solution, but their inconsistent form and managerial uncertainty may deter him. Chelsea have already spent heavily on defenders like Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, but injuries have hampered their progress. Van de Ven's versatility to play as a left-back or centre-back could be valuable. However, Chelsea's need for a striker might take priority in the summer transfer window. The club's ownership is reportedly divided on the next manager, which could delay transfer plans. Van de Ven may prefer a move to Liverpool, given their Champions League status and defensive needs.

They missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer, and I was a little bit surprised that they let it go to the winter window to try and do the business. You always bring competition in then; other teams are looking for players in that position, and City have got there before Liverpool. I think they missed out on one there. Leoni came in at the start of the season; obviously, he picked up the really bad injury, which has set him back, and we brought in Jacquet as well. I know he’s not coming until next season, but he is quality, and they have spent a lot of money on him. He will be looking at playing in the team, but they do need another centre-half. There are a couple out there, but Micky van de Ven seems to be [on the market]. It will be interesting to see how it develops at Tottenham because if they do go down, they will be looking to offload players, and Liverpool might nick him for a little bit cheaper.

The future of van de Ven remains uncertain, with unknowns including whether Tottenham will be relegated, whether van de Ven will leave, and which club is most likely to sign him. Additionally, it is unclear if Igor Tudor will remain as Tottenham manager beyond this season or if Liam Rosenior will be sacked as Chelsea manager before the end of the season.

Micky van de Ven from Tottenham. I think he’s looking like he wants to leave and I think he would be a brilliant addition for Chelsea. They want to play that high line and you need a defender with pace and, you know, a good one-on-one defender. He’s brilliant.
