  • Season 3 premieres with the assassination of home secretary Isaac Turner witnessed by Rachel Carey
  • Carey discovers the assassin's identity has been altered by deepfake technology Correction
  • Carey is Acting Commander of Counter Terrorism Command amid an ongoing inquiry into Correction misuse

The BBC drama The Capture returned for a third season on Sunday (8 March). The third season of The Capture explores deepfake technology known as Correction. This season starts amidst an inquiry into the unlawful use of the UK intelligence service's video manipulation programme after Carey exposed it at the end of series two. MP Isaac Turner, played by Paapa Essiedu, has now become home secretary, and looks set to become the next prime minister. Isaac Turner is assassinated while giving a speech right in front of Carey's eyes. Carey spots the assassin, played by Killian Scott, who points the gun at her before sparing her life and making a getaway. When the cameras are rolled back, Carey discovers that the identity of the assassin has completely changed to an unknown character played by Joe Dempsie.

Holliday Grainger's character Rachel Carey returns in the third season. Carey is now in the position of Acting Commander of Counter Terrorism Command while MI5 find a new candidate to take over the role. In the year that has passed in the show, new camera systems have been implemented, designed to detect when Correction is in play as it's happening. The inquiry into the unlawful use of the video manipulation programme remains ongoing. Carey's ability to prove the assassin's true identity to her superiors is unclear. The full motives behind the assassination of Isaac Turner and the subsequent cover-up also remain unknown.

It's such an entertaining, twisty journey for the audience that I would feel terrible if I did anything to compromise that.

Isaac Turner's political rise from MP to home secretary positioned him as the likely next prime minister before his assassination. His death occurs during a public speech, witnessed directly by Rachel Carey, who is serving as Acting Commander of Counter Terrorism Command at the time. This assassination sets the central mystery for the season.

Killian Scott plays the actor at the centre of the twist in The Capture. Killian Scott has two entrances in episode one, and they're polar opposites at a level of who he is, and certainly as far as Rachel Carey and the audience are concerned. Everyone else in the show is unaware of what takes place regarding the assassination; they all think it's Joe Dempsie because it's Joe Dempsie's face. Killian Scott is head of intelligence within MI5, and yet as far as Rachel Carey sees him, he's assassinated the guaranteed next prime minister. The exact mechanics of how the Correction deepfake technology works to alter the assassin's appearance on camera have not been fully explained.

Carey meets the successful candidate replacing her as Commander of Counter Terrorism Command, who is the assassin she saw kill Turner earlier in the episode. This confrontation places Carey in a precarious position. How Carey will navigate her role while harboring these suspicions remains to be seen.

Rachel Carey is stuck in the ultimate paranoid freak-out. This psychological state stems from witnessing the assassination and then seeing the killer's identity replaced through technological manipulation. Carey's paranoia is compounded by her isolation, as she alone knows the truth about the assassin's identity.

Everyone else in the show is unaware of what takes place. In terms of the assassination, they all think it's Joe Dempsie because it's Joe Dempsie's face. Poor Joe is getting thrown under the bus!

Killian Scott, Actor

Despite the unlikely circumstances behind their meeting, Killian Scott's character and Rachel Carey sort of need to operate as something of a team. This forced alliance emerges from their shared knowledge of the truth. Killian Scott has spent the press tour for the show terrified he will give away any spoilers.

I'm head of intelligence now within MI5, and yet as far as she sees me, I've assassinated the guaranteed next prime minister. So what happens between those two things, and how can both things be true? That is the big conundrum for Rachel this season.
