According to reports, Sarah Danh and her husband Luke Gradl, 28, left for their honeymoon on April 7. Sources say she was rushed to the emergency room in Japan around 48 hours after arriving and was diagnosed with acute liver failure. Danh reportedly suffered from jaundice, vomiting, fever, body aches, and extreme hepatic encephalopathy, though she had shown no health signs at her wedding.
In Japan, Danh was reportedly on 24/7 CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy), dialysis, blood transfusions, and plasma exchanges. A GoFundMe fundraiser was created to help pay for medical expenses, as hospital bills in Japan must be paid in full or treatments stop, and it has raised over $165,000. Her mother, Le Le, arrived in Japan on April 13 to support her.
Danh was being prepared for a flight home to Texas on Monday. Her uncle, Khang Le, said the flight home was the most critical part of her recovery, with Danh unconscious on a stretcher on the runway awaiting her flight. The flight was over 20 hours with three refueling stops, and although Japanese and American medical staff prepared her for the trip, the risk was still incredibly high.
The cause of Danh's acute liver failure is unknown, and it is unclear if she successfully arrived in Texas or received a liver transplant. Her current medical condition and prognosis, as well as any complications during the flight or specific treatments planned in Texas, have not been disclosed.
